About Us

Establisment

Established in 2004, the Sandton Hindu School was founded to preserve and promote the Gujarati language among the youth. Over time, it has evolved into a cultural learning centre for all Hindus in South Africa, now offering tuition in Gujarati, Hindi, and Hinduism with plans to introduce more languages spoken within the local Indian diaspora.

The School

The School is a non-profit organization run by a dedicated team of parent volunteers—our Exco Team. Collected fees go towards teacher salaries, classroom upkeep, and learning materials. We currently have nine passionate educators, fondly known as “Baheno,” some of whom have been with us since the beginning.

Where

Based at the Marlboro Radhe Shyam Mandir, the School is also a hub for religious and cultural festivities in northern Johannesburg. In 2019, we embraced online learning, extending access to students beyond Gauteng.

Learning

Our teaching style emphasises play, movement, and conversational learning over rote methods. Classes are offered from Foundation Phase to Grade 5 and take place on Saturday afternoons from 13:00 to 17:00.

We believe language and culture should be lived, not just learned, so instead of traditional homework, we encourage “home play” to naturally reinforce skills outside the classroom.
We nurture pride in our Hindu heritage by teaching Gujarati, Hindi, and Hinduism in a way that connects children to their roots. Through language and culture, we help shape confident, grounded individuals who know where they come from.
We believe parents are vital partners in a child’s cultural journey. As a parent-run school, we embrace seva (selfless service), creating a warm, collaborative environment where families grow and learn together.
Our faith and festivals are not just remembered — they are experienced. From Diwali to Ram Navami, the school is a vibrant centre where traditions are lived, celebrated, and passed down with love and meaning.
We teach through movement, music, storytelling, and conversation — not rote memorisation. This makes learning joyful, meaningful, and lasting, guided by educators ("Baheno") who teach with heart and dedication.

Our Mission

To nurture a love for Gujarati, Hindi, and Hinduism among our youth by providing accessible, engaging, and values-based education rooted in culture, language, and spirituality.

We aim to create a welcoming space where children connect with their heritage, develop a sense of identity, and grow into compassionate, culturally grounded individuals.
